# Task states

> The labels the dashboard shows for a task and for a submission, and what each label means.

The dashboard shows one label for each task. The label says where the task stands. Each task moves on its own: a task that waits for you does not hold up the other tasks of the submission.

## The labels of a task

| Label | What it means |
| ------------------ | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Listed | The task was found in your archive and has a digest. It is in the preview, and you have not confirmed yet. |
| Checking | The task is held to the intake standard. |
| Needs from you | The task cannot go on until you supply something. The task screen names what is needed. |
| Scoring | The task met the intake standard. It is being given a difficulty band. |
| Waiting for review | The audit does not start until an engineer acts. |
| Queued | The task waits for a sandbox. |
| Running | The task is being audited. |
| In review | An engineer is looking at the task before its result is published. |
| Clean | The verdict is clean. It holds for the exact files that were audited. |
| Flawed | The verdict is flawed. The finding is published with its proof. |
| Withdrawn | You removed the task, or you cancelled its submission. It is not audited. |

## Notes on some labels

### Needs from you

"Needs from you" is not a verdict. A task with this label is never counted as clean, and it is never counted as flawed. See [a task](/docs/dashboard/task) for how to answer a request.

### In review

An engineer is looking at the task before its result is published. You never see a draft.

### Checking and Running

When a run fails for a reason on the side of Horizon Audit, the run is tried again. The label does not change, and the failure is never counted against the task.

### Clean and Flawed

These two labels are the verdicts. They are final for the task as it was audited. A changed task is sent again under a new collection name, and you withdraw the old task. [Read a verdict](/docs/guide/read-a-verdict) says what each verdict contains.

## The labels of a submission

A submission has no verdict of its own. In the list of submissions, the "Tasks" column shows one of these.

| What you see | What it means |
| ------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| Reading your source | The archive is being read. Tasks are being found and given a digest. |
| Needs from you | The archive could not be read, holds no task, holds two tasks with one name, or is over a limit. |
| Cancelled | You cancelled the submission before you confirmed it. None of its tasks is audited. |
| Counts by label | After the preview is ready, the submission shows how many of its tasks have each task label. |

See [submissions](/docs/dashboard/submissions) for the screens.
